San Diego, California
San Diego. It’s your last stop before fleeing the country to Mexico and is filled with the spectral remains of those Southern Californians who have shaken off this mortal coil. Time to do some ghost tourism!
We stayed at the haunted
Horton Grand Hotel – 311 Island Ave – and after investigating it thoroughly, we move on to other San Diego haunts.
On our first day in San Diego we visited:
U.S. Grant Hotel - 326 Broadway
Old Point Loma Lighthouse - 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Drive
The Berkeley Steam Ferry Boat - 1429 Harbor Drive
Star of India - 1429 Harbor Drive
Gaslamp Museum (aka Davis-Horton House) (aka William Heath Davis House)– 410 Island Ave
In the evening after a short nap and dinner, we went to:
El Campo Santo Cemetery - 2410 San Diego Ave
The Whaley House –2476 San Diego Ave (Where we participated in a guided night time paranormal investigation).
On the last day before starting our drive home we stopped by:
Victorian Village – Heritage Park 2455 Heritage Park Row
We didn’t get a chance to check out these other potentially haunted areas:
Villa Montezuma - 1925 K Street
Seaport Village (La punta de los meurtos) – 598-538 Pacific Highway
Cosmopolitan Hotel – 2660 Calhoun St
Additional Information:
The Gaslamp Museum is not open every day and they close relatively early but you can buy your tickets at the window. Make sure you double check their hours though. They occasionally have fun paranormal events so check their website!
The Horton Grand Hotel is catty-corner to The Gaslamp Museum! Its a Two-fer!! The Horton Grand Hotel is in the Gaslamp part of San Diego.
The Whaley House is a MUST DO! You can buy tickets for their daytime tours at the door. But we recommend that you buy tickets ahead of time to get the time slot that is most convenient. Look for their late night paranormal investigations! They do them regularly but buy tickets ahead of time. Space is limited and it gets filled up fast. It is worth every penny! Tickets.
The Cosmopolitan Hotel is small and fills up quickly. Reserve your room well in advance if you would like to stay there. This hotel is in Old Town San Diego. To be fair, we have tried to get in to this place three different times. You can’t go in unless you are staying there.
The Cosmopolitan Hotel has a delightful Saturday brunch (no reservations taken) but the day we arrived it was rented out for a private party. So, call ahead to make sure it will be open the day you go. It is another way to get into the building.
You will need a car/Uber/Taxi in San Diego if you want to see both the Gaslamp and the Old Town parts of the city. They are not walking distance. The Hotel Del Coronado is in San Diego county, but not in the city of San Diego (It is in Coronado, CA) and about a 30 minute drive from Old Town San Diego.
